Call Me Maybe: Thanks for the Earworm Justin!

Surely, by now, you’ve heard this song. We’ve been listening to it for almost a month now, and it took a wonderful reader to remind us that we hadn’t written a post on it yet… which is unbelievable, because we’re obsessed.

“Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen is undeniably nonsensical fluff. But it is the kind of fluff that only a lyrical/musical genius could write! It is like the perfect song to go viral and is the catchiest song that you have ever heard. We guarantee it will get stuck in your head. Promise.

Stages of “Call Me Maybe” Feelings:

  • First listen: What is this song?? It makes no sense! But towards the end you are kind of tapping your foot..
  • Fourth listen: Why am I still listening to this? Why is it stuck in my head? Why do people like this??? Call me maybe!! Wait? Did I just say/sing that in public?
  • Twelfth listen: THIS SONG IS AMAZING CARLY RAE JEPSEN IS A GENIUS

Trust us. You’ll get there. This whole thing is thanks to the Biebs, as are so many (all) great things. He tweeted about how much he liked the song (Carly Rae is a fellow Canadian) and then made this video, along with some famous friends, to the song. It already has 27 million views.

Notable:

  • Ashley Tisdale is hilarious in this.
  • Justin Bieber’s sweet dance.
  • Justin Bieber says “swag” at the end, and it is simultaneously funny and a little repulsive. We do love Justin, but we cringed a little in this moment.
  • Selena Gomez seems like a real winner.
  • We want those little mustaches they have.
  • We really wish that we were invited to this. Why weren’t we?

So that’s how most people (ourselves included) first heard “Call Me Maybe.” But the Biebs cannot hold a candle to the insanity of the official video.

Carly Rae Jepsen… sees this really hot guy, washes her car to try to get his attention, falls, hits her head, imagines them in a romance novel, sings to him, and then… there’s the twist! He’s actually interested in her (male) bassist. Interesting twist, and one that definitely makes us think we’d like this girl.

We checked out the other songs she has on YouTube, and while they’re fine and prove that Carly Rae Jepsen is definitely a good singer, we’re not sure that they have the same catchiness that makes “Call Me Maybe” so inescapable. Also, they kind of make sense, which is a distinct change. Seriously: “Before you came into my life, I missed you so bad”? What does that even mean??

While we may have no idea what Carly Rae Jepsen is talking about, that certainly doesn’t mean that we aren’t enjoying every second of “Call Me Maybe.” Trust us, you’ll get there–but sometimes it does take 12 listens. By the end of these listens you’ll be like us, ready and willing to move to Canada. Here we come Carly and Bieber!!!! CALL US MAYBE??

Hunger Games Review!

SO WE FINALLY SAW THE HUNGER GAMES, GUYS. Just like everyone else in America did this weekend. And it was AWESOME.While there has been some grumbling on the internet about the movie’s length, we didn’t feel that it was too long! There is a lot to fit in there, and we felt that the movie did a very good job with the delicate task of making a book into a movie. We’ll break it down into best parts and the parts that could have been improved… and we promise, this is our last post on The Hunger Games for a while.

Best Parts:
1.) The Game Maker’s Score: Jennifer Lawrence was hilarious in this moment! While all the judges were ignoring her, Katniss just decided to do what she wanted! It was great! And, additionally, when Effie was lecturing her about manners right afterwards, we definitely cracked up. This was one of the moments we were anticipating, and it did not let us down!

2.) Effie: She was so great. She is a difficult part to play because you are supposed to be repulsed by her shallow, superficial and callous attitude towards the tributes, and yet she is also supposed to be endearing in a strange way. Elizabeth Banks was hysterical and we enjoyed all of her scenes, yet she still managed to be repugnant, in a comical kind of way.

3.) Casting: In general, this cast was spot-on. Jennifer Lawrence did a magnificent job at portraying Katniss’s emotions without having to have an awkward voiceover (ahem, Twilight). Josh Hutcherson as Peeta was great as well–we could go on and on about each individual cast member. A couple of standouts were Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman and Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane, who did a great job at portraying the disconnection between the Capitol and the other citizens while still keeping their characters human.

4.) Rue’s Death: Guys, we cried. Like hardcore. They just chose the most adorable actress ever to play Rue, and her death was really, really hard to watch. Jennifer Lawrence’s emotional breakdown, flower arrangement, and salute to District 11 was seriously the sweetest and saddest part of the movie. It was one of those moments in the book and in the movie that reminds us that things aimed at teenagers can cover some seriously emotional material and have it be extremely moving and touching. We are maybe tearing up now just thinking about this moment.

Room for Improvement:
1.) Katniss and Peeta’s entrance: The costumes here are supposed to be so magnificent and eye-catching that Katniss becomes permanently known as “the Girl on Fire.” While the costumes were great, the scene was structured in such an odd way! Basically we watched all of the tributes come in and then go out again, without much focus being put on how great Katniss and Peeta looked. Disappointing.

2.) Camera Work for the First 20 Minutes: Okay guys, when the movie started, there was a lot of shaky camera work going on. Hunting in the forest, buying the Mockingjay pin, walking around depressing District 12, the camera seemed to follow everywhere Jennifer Lawrence looked (lots of unnecessary close ups…). It made us a little seasick and we were worried that the whole movie was going to be like this. However, we either got used to it, or they found a sturdier camera, because the rest of the movie was easier to watch.

3.) Cutting the Mutts: In the book, those dogs at the end are more like a wolf pack, and they have the eyes of the dead tributes. It is one of the most disturbing things that happens in the entire series, and one of the moments that best illustrates the ends the Capitol will go to in order to ensure compliance. In the movie there were just some giant dogs trying to kill them… We can understand why they made the change, but it was one of the most original moments of the book and the one that made you fully understand the horror of the Capitol. They should have kept it in.

4.) Cinna: Don’t get us wrong, Lenny Kravitz was a fine choice to play Cinna. But in the book, Cinna is maybe the most interesting character–there is always the sense that there’s more going on under the surface than what we’re seeing. He has a much stronger connection with Katniss in the books, and becomes a person that she trusts more than anyone else in the Capitol. It would’ve been nice to show that Katniss was capable of forming that sort of bond.

Overall though, The Hunger Games was a great adaptation of a huge amount of source material. The filmmakers crammed in as much as they possibly could, and made a movie that was pretty good along the way! Impressive indeed. More than anything, we are super excited to see a heroine like Katniss kicking ass, taking names, and earning tons of box office dollars. Go see it and understand what literally everyone else is talking about!

Hunger Games Anticipation!

Continuing our unabashed promotion of The Hunger Games (no, of course we’re not being paid for this), we have decided to put our minds together to create a list of the moments we are most excited to see in the upcoming movie! This was hard y’all. We are obviously super excited to see the entire movie!! But, for you guys, we decided to pick our most anticipated scenes. THERE ARE SPOILERS. DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW THINGS ABOUT THE HUNGER GAMES.

Top 5 Anticipated Moments:

1.) The Cave Scene: Obvi we are Team Peeta, like anyone else with half a brain, so we are super excited to see Katniss and Peeta start to form a real relationship. The cave is one of the sweetest and in some ways most innocent parts of the book, so we want to see some moments where they get to be actual people!

2.) Makeover/The Fire Costume: Katniss doesn’t like it when she gets to the Capitol and has to be made over, because she thinks it’s super shallow that she has to be beautified to enter a battle-to-the-death contest. Which it is. But who doesn’t love a good makeover scene?! Also her prep team is going to look insane. In the book one of them literally has green skin. We are super excited to meet Cinna (best character ever) and see that wonderful fire costume for the opening ceremonies as well! Why don’t our clothes light on (synthetic) fire??

3.) Rue’s death and song: Don’t get us wrong, we love Rue and are not actually excited for her to die. However, this is definitely an emotional centerpiece of the movie, and we are really interested to see how they put it on screen. Both Katniss singing to Rue and covering her in flowers will be really emotionally affecting and will have to be handled carefully. Hopefully they pull it off!

4.) Katniss Getting Her Score: So while the entire world has already realized that Katniss is a complete badass, this is the moment when the Game Makers realize that this girl is legit. While reading the book, this was one of those moments when you were just like, “HELL YES KATNISS!” It was super satisfying to read and we want it to be just as satisfying to watch!

5.) Arena Reveal: What exactly does the Hunger Games arena look like? We just want to know! Even while reading the book, we were not entirely sure what it was supposed to look like… Forest-y? Gladiator -y? Mysteries of the universe…

Do you have a moment you’re most excited for? ALL OF THEM?? Us too, not that you could tell. See you at the midnight premiere!

Lana Del Rey’s “Hunger Games”

Ladies and gentlemen, what you have all been waiting for, The Hunger Games movie is ALMOST HERE!!!!! For those of you who are unaware, the greatest cinema event of 2012 is happening in less than a week (movie is out in theaters March 23 – that is this Friday people)! And while we are super prepared (we may have already bought midnight premiere tickets…) we realize that not everyone is as intense as we are.
So to help you prepare and get in the mindset for the 2012 Hunger Games (like the Olympics.. but better) we are scouring the internet and bringing you only the best Hunger Games themed educational material / parodies / fan fiction / etc. Starting off our week we have the excellent parody of Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” and The Hunger Games done by Second City (another one of our favorite things) comedian Holly Laurent. It’s pretty awesome.

Favorite Moments:

  • She sounds exactly like Lana Del Rey!
  • “Gale’s this guy that I know, he’s got a girl’s name” – FINALLY someone said it! Gale is a girl’s name! Weren’t we all thinking it while reading the books?
  • She is so mopey the whole time! Just like that other mopey singer we know..
  • “I don’t want Peeta to be dead, a pita is a pouch of bread, but that’s his name” – Seriously, she is reading my mind. The names in this book…. so weird.
  • She also captures Lana Del Rey’s mannerisms perfectly in general!

Stay tuned for more Hunger Games excitement this week!

Snow White Trailer Smack Down!

Just in case you haven’t noticed, Snow White is in this year! There are two competing Snow White movies coming out within a couple of months–by far the most Snow White we’ve ever had at once. Mirror Mirror is out first, with its upcoming release on March 30 and Snow White and the Huntsmanfollows, opening June 1. In preparation for these releases, movie goers everywhere (or at least we) have been wondering, which Snow White adaptation will be better? So we decided to watch the trailers and place our bets, in order of release date. We know you’ve been wishing for this.Mirror Mirror (March 30)

So this trailer. So many questions…
1.) Why is Lily Collins starring as Snow White? She’s pretty, but we are not going to believe she’s prettier than Julia Roberts. Come on. Also did anyone else see Abduction? Because we did. And we do not think Lily Collins’s acting is up to leading lady standards… especially next to Julia!
2.) Why are we so uncomfortable throughout this whole trailer? Oh yeah. Snow White’s dwarfs. Is it just us that find it weird that they make jokes in the trailer about their height? Why are they continually hitting each other and being astounded by Snow White? It just… makes us uncomfortable.
3.) What is the plot line even??? Snow White goes into battle maybe against Armie Hammer, but then maybe he switches sides at some point? The trailer doesn’t even create a reason for her to be in a battle in the first place. What? Why are you fighting Julia? YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GOOD REASON TO FIGHT JULIA.
4.) Julia. What are you doing in this movie? You are clearly the only reason that this movie has a remote chance of being good. That’s not entirely true.. we like Nathan Lane as well. To him we pose a similar (the exact same) question: What are you doing in this movie?

Snow White and the Huntsman (June 1)

This trailer is straight up AMAZING. We are so on board with this warrior Snow White adaptation. Also Charlize Theron. With this trailer, instead of questions, we have compiled a list of the most awesome parts. (It was legitimately hard to choose only a couple.)

1.) Kristen Stewart does not speak. We do not intend for this to be mean, instead we are pointing out that when you have a questionable leading lady as Snow White (aka Lily Collins or Kristen Stewart), it is best to focus your trailer on the more reputable actors. We still think Kristen Stewart will be great, but in the trailer it was an excellent choice for them to pull focus from her, since the vast majority of America thinks that she is actually Bella Swan.
2.) CHARLIZE THERON. Seriously she is going to be the best Evil Queen ever. Her voiceover! Her sucking the youth out of a woman!!! What?? Why is this movie not coming out tomorrow?
3.) Charlize Theron turning into a flock of ravens at the end. We’d like to see Julia try to do that.
4.) No dwarfs appear in this trailer to make us uncomfortable. Instead Chris Hemsworth has a really large ax and is hunting Kristen Stewart.
5.) The special effects in general look 123894239075 times more legit than Mirror Mirror. The part where the soldier gets sliced in half and turns into a flock of ravens is amazing!
6.) IN GENERAL THE WHOLE THING WAS OUR FAVORITE PART!

So clearly, Snow White and the Huntsman looks like the better movie. Based on the trailers alone, Mirror Mirror has a decent shot at some Razzie nominations and the Huntsman might actually get some Oscar or Golden Globe nods for their special effects!

However, does that mean we’re not going to see Mirror Mirror? Of course not, that looks like a train wreck and we are always on board for those. We may be anticipating Snow White and the Huntsman more eagerly (and we think it will make way more money), but we are clearly going to go laugh at Mirror Mirror at the earliest opportunity. Everyone wins!

Friends With Kids: Dysfunctionally Sweet

So this weekend, we continued to support the cast of Bridesmaids in their second movie together, Friends With Kids. While it is not exactly the same cast (there was some mixing and matching and some new blood in there), Kristin Wiig and Jon Hamm reprised their roles as a dysfunctional couple, Maya Rudolph reprised her role as likable best friend and Chris O’Dowd played yet again, the most likable guy in the whole movie. And we still liked all of them as much as we did in Bridesmaids! (Except Jon Hamm. He was so mean to Kristin Wiig in the movie! Not okay, dude.)

Why, you ask, would we pay ten dollars to see the same people play the same roles in a different movie? Because, fundamentally, Friends With Kids is a very different movie than Bridesmaids. Here is how:

  • It shows both women and men’s approaches to marriage and relationships. Now we loved Bridesmaids, but as the title implies, the story was centered around the women. In this movie, we see Adam Scott just as often as we see Jennifer Westfeldt–which is great, since it gives a more complete picture of their relationship.
  • There were lots of children in it. This movie takes place at a different stage in a couple’s life than Bridesmaids. It deals with the difficult part of relationship when kids enter the picture. Warning, though: it is kind of a bleak look at relationships with kids.
  • Megan Fox showed up. So we know she was in the trailer, but it still threw us when she showed up in the movie. This movie was chock full of comedy royalty… and Megan Fox. She was pretty good in it though, even though she was basically just playing the hot girl. (Such a change, we know.)
  • THAT LITTLE BOY WAS SO CUTE. We just felt like it needed to be said. The son of Jennifer Westfeldt and Adam Scott was the most adorable thing that has happened in cinema… pretty much ever. All three actors used to play him were amazing.
  • Jennifer Westfeldt is absurdly talented. Girlfriend wrote, directed, and starred in this movie. And convinced boyfriend Jon Hamm to be in in it. Like seriously, stop making us all look bad in comparison.

In conclusion, we really liked this movie! There were definitely some painfully awkward moments where we decided to stare into our popcorn for a minute or two instead of watching the screen… Like we might have missed half of the dinner party scene because we don’t deal well with confrontation. But even despite that, it was a really sweet and fun movie! Go see it.

Miranda Lambert’s “Over You”

Miranda Lambert is a BAMF, as evidenced by her taking on Chris Brown and his many Twitter followers in the last week or so by pointing out that his beating Rihanna was unacceptable… and getting hate for it. (WTF, America.)

But! She is also very complex and has lots of feelings, as seen in her new video for “Over You.” Warning: This song is super super super sad.

The Return of LiLo!!!

Lindsay Lohan has been very, very busy in the last week… for the first time in a while. She has had interviews with Jimmy Fallon, Jay Leno, Matt Lauer, and a gig hosting SNL! And perhaps the most remarkable thing about all of her appearances is that they have been pretty, well, good. She looks poised, sober and professional, and says that she now wants to be known for her work, not her exploits. We’ll see how this goes. Here are our highs and lows of Lindsay’s hosting night! (Warning: This is a long post.)
